Other Microscope Choices

• Scope-on-a-Rope

An alternative to QX5 is the "Scope-on-a-Rope"- a digital camera/microscope that produces a video signal that can be viewed on a TV or similar monitor (a newer version also works through a computer). This was a pioneering educational enterprise from Louisiana State University. Primary used as a hand-held device that one holds in proximity to a specimen. I have not used this scope, but there are likely advantages and disadvantages. Advantage is that it might be easier for younger kids, since they do not have to use a focusing knob. Disadvantage is that it is hard to keep the object in focus at higher magnification. Time lapse imaging is also much easier with a stable stage.

“Scope-on-a-Rope” is >10-fold more expensive (~$1800). Purchase and more information can be viewed at

The Scope-on-Rope L2 is the latest version, but still ~$1000 for a complete kit (you can buy 10 QX5 scopes for this price). There is a very nice www site from Louisiana State University explaining the "Scope-on-a-Rope", including many images and exercises with this microscope:
