How Big Is It?
Scientists make measurements. How big is an onion cell? How can I measure this?
Kids can measure the dimensions of an object under the microscope. An easy way to do this (e.g. for K-3 students) is to simply put a ruler along side the specimen and then estimate the size of the object. A better way is offered by the “Measurement” tool in the Control Panel in the miXscope software. This method is explained in the power point in this section. The method is accurate, but requires a ruler and a few minutes to calibrate (converting the number of pixels in the image to inches or millimeters).
